Common Questions: What kinds of trees do you use? Unless otherwise requested, our homes are quoted as Western Red Cedar. Spruce, pine and fir [SPF] are often available and will be priced upon your request.
ISN'T CEDAR EXPENSIVE? The initial is cost is more than SPF; however, this modest price differential is more than offset by its remarkable resistance rot, insect attack and greater insulative value.
ARE YOUR LOGS KILN DRIED? Due to the size of the logs used, kiln drying is really not possible for anyone. Even companies who advertise kiln-dried, know that they are able to remove only surface moisture. Since we use primarily winter harvested trees [when the sap is down] and store them for up to several years, our logs will usually have an interior moisture content of 16% or less. Within several months the core moisture will be around 7-9%.
WILL THE LOGS CHECK, SHRINK OR SETTLE? ABSOLUTELY! All logs, whether machine fabricated or hand-crafted, regardless of style or species will check, shrink, settle or crack! Some species more, some less; but, all solid timbers do have this in common. Many owners feel this adds to the charm of a log home. We agree!
ISN'T SETTLING A PROBLEM? It could be if the home is not properly engineered and properly built. The CHISUM system has been utilized in the production, sale and construction of thousands of homes, during the last 23 years. The only time there has been a problem is when the builder, did not or would not follow instructions. Log homes, because they do settle, must have allowance for that settling. If done properly, there will be no problem.
DO YOU USE INTERIOR LOG WALLS? Only if they are required for structural purposes; otherwise, they use up too much floor space and the additional cost can be excessive.
